New: Handcrafted Lotion

It's been just about a month since Paul-John and I have been using my handcrafted deodorant, and we're both hooked.  I knew I would love it, but it makes me really happy that Paul-John does too: he has tried most of the natural deodorants on the market and they all dry his skin out to the point that it starts to peel.  It's also been slightly longer since I've stopped using shampoo.  I think Paul-John is going to finish using the shampoo that we have and then try out the baking soda and acv rinse, but he is pretty low maintenance about his hair so I think he'll make the switch with me.

I initially made only about a 1/4 pint of deodorant and it just ran out, even with both of us using it daily - very economical.  Since I was making another batch, I decided to try my hand at lotion.  This winter my skin has been drier than years past, and I could use some of the same ingredients that went into the deodorant.  After looking around the internet for a while, I didn't see any recipes that came close to what I wanted so I decided to just wing it.  Lotion is just oil + water + emulsifier + anything else you want to add.  I mixed almond oil, emulsifying wax, shea butter, mango butter and kokum butter and melted them together.  I heated up some water separately, mixed 'em together, added the essential oils I wanted, and then poured it into a container to cool.

My biggest concern was texture - I didn't measure anything, and was worried that it could come out too thin or too solid.  When I used it the next day, it had the perfect lotion texture and I felt like a genius.  But by day 2, it had thickened up quite a bit and wasn't pumping very easily.  I thought this could've been due to the low temperature of the house so I brought it into the bathroom while I took a shower.  Turns out my lotion is more like a body butter than lotion.  It's creamy and rich but really easy to rub into the skin.  It leaves my skin a bit shiny in spots that aren't extremely dry, but absorbs completely and without leaving any residue in the driest areas.

Overall, I would call this experiment a moderate success - it definitely fills a need for my extremely dry skin.  On the other hand, my goal was to create a really basic hand/body lotion that can be more widely applied, so I'll just have to try it again when this batch runs out.

Weekend Wonderful

Paul-John and I truly had a wonderful weekend in Provincetown.  We arrived around 4 on Friday afternoon and left around 2 on Sunday.  We stayed at a guest house right in the middle of Commercial Street that was tiny, but cozy and had excellent coffee.  (Not to mention the price was right: stay one night, get one night free!)  While I wasn't able to find the few things I was hoping to pick up, we spent about three hours on Saturday just strolling around and we were able to pick up some great finds - a small rug from Turkey we are using as a doormat, a birthday gift for Paul-John's mom, a neat vase and a great scarf, to name a few.  The vibe was exactly what we wanted - quiet, but not boring.  I was in such a good mood I even made small talk with everyone, and enjoyed it!  (Small talk, usually, is a huge pet peeve of mine.  I am not particularly nice to strangers.  Just not my thing.)

Saturday night we started at a taverny-type bar, where there was drag karaoke, and vacation-John made an appearance and sang a song! We then crossed the street to a bar located in a basement, where we got very drunk, played lots of pool, and chatted with a few locals.  While I was standing at the bar waiting to order, the man next to me complemented me on my jukebox picks (which of course MADE my night) and we chatted for a solid ten minutes.  We also chatted with three other guys who were playing pool at the tab
le next to us.  We stayed until way past last call, and then there was a snowball fight outside before we went back to the hotel.

Sunday we went to a breakfast buffet and then drove out along the tip of the Cape.  Beautiful, but incredibly windy.  This photo is currently the background for my desktop:

Goals

In just over an hour Paul-John and I will be leaving for Provincetown for the weekend.  Today is only our third day off together since Thanksgiving (about eight weeks) and the very first one we can spend alone.  I am very excited for this weekend.

I also had yesterday off, which makes this a four day weekend - really freaking sweet.  Around Wednesday I made a mental list of what I want to accomplish for this weekend, and yesterday was not such a good start, in a really ridiculous kind of way.  Here is my list for the rest of the weekend:

  • Make real progress on curtains.  (I have 13 rows done) Possibly start a cute puff stitch hat with leftover alpaca and Noro.
  • Finish at least one of the three books I am reading.
  • Buy a new nose ring - my last one was too short for my nose, fell out while I was sleeping.
  • Possibly buy new work shoes - the souls have started to separate on my current ones.
  • See a drag show.
I suppose thats not too an intimidating list.
